| HOW TO CHOOSE A PRINTER |
| Often the decision to buy a particular printer is made for
you. Often when a consumer buys a computer they also get a
printer as part of the “bundle” and its often
offset with a rebate that essentially pays for the printer….ever
wonder why? The simple reason is you were given a razor…the
real money for the manufacturer is in the blades and, in this
case, the inkjet or laser cartridges you will buy over the
life of the printer. |

| SOMETIMES THE “FREE” PRINTER
ISN’T THE BEST DEAL |
| The truth is for most home of home/office the printer selection
is not as critical as lifetime costs of the consumables the
printers uses. The number one cost of printer operation is
laser or inkjet cartridges. Therefore, when buying a printer,
it is important to consider cost of the consumables. We have
found often the “bundled” printer, even when free,
will not yield the lowest overall cost of ownership over its
life. Why? The consumables for that particular printer are
only available from the original manufacturer and at very
high unit cost. A typical original manufacturers inkjet cartridge
will cost $30 or more dollars. If that cartridge is not available
as a re-manufactured product then you will continue to pay
a high price for consumables throughout the life of the printer.
Therefore although the printer is free you pay for it many
times over through very high consumables cost. |

| SO WHAT PRINTER SHOULD I BUY? |
In general we urge consumers to consider Hewlett-Packard
printers first (www.hp.com).
HP printers dominate the market. In most all cases HP products
can use re-manufactured cartridges as HP does not aggressively
try to design printers whose cartridges can not be remanufactured.
If the bundle comes with an HP printer most likely it can
use remanufactured cartridges but if it doesn’t then
we urge you to consider asking for a “trade”
rather than take the bundled printer. In either case check
with Ink Restore to see if the cartridges can be remanufactured.
You should always buy the printer that will meet you specific
application first but if given a choice then buy HP!
